At St Mary and St Peter, we believe that all children deserve the best possible start in education. Early phonics lays the foundational knowledge required for pupils to become confident and competent readers. “Reading is fundamental to education. Proficiency in reading, writing and spoken language is vital for pupils’ success”. (Department for Education, 2023)
At St Mary and St Peter, we follow Read Write Inc. Phonics, the UK’s leading synthetic phonics program.
With Read Write Inc. Phonics all children:
- reach the expected standard of the phonics screening check
- develop reading fluency and read with comprehension
- develop cooperative behaviour and articulate their ideas and understanding
- spell and write with confidence
(Ruth Miskin Literacy Ltd, 2022)
All pupils who access Read Write Inc. Phonics are assessed at the end of each half-term. Depending on their assessment, pupils will either progress onto the next coloured band or, they may need to stay in their current group to consolidate new sounds they have acquired so they can confidently read them in real and pseudo words.
If you would like to support your child further at home to learn and retain new sounds, please speak to Miss Brooks regarding the ‘Virtual Classroom’ support we can offer. The RWI Parent Booklets will also offer ideas on how you can support your child's reading at home.
